Arroyo Grande

A walk through the charming Village of Arroyo Grande is like taking a step back in time.  The family-friendly village is rich in history with buildings dating back to the late 1800’s – early 1900’s.First settled in 1868, with just a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, and a stage station, the valley’s rich soil soon led to a hard-working farming community well known for its prize winning produce. Now considered one of the premier towns in San Luis Obispo County, Arroyo Grande is a mix of Victorian classics, craftsman bungalows, California ranch style homes, and newly developed communities, most which are conveniently located to schools, parks, and shopping.

Farming is still an integral part of Arroyo Grande’s flavor that can be seen (and tasted!) with a visit to the Saturday Farmer’s Market held right in the heart of the village. You can find a variety of mouthwatering farm fresh fruits and veggies, talented local artists and live entertainment. While you’re there, don’t forget to take a lively stroll on the famous swinging bridge built in the 1880’s, always a favorite for the kids, and most adults!

Arroyo Grande has a delectable mix of restaurants, tasting rooms, and wineries to tempt your palate. For an authentic ranch-style meal, F. McLintock’s Saloon and Dining House has been cooking up their famous oak pit bbq steaks, ribs, and of course, seafood in the area since 1973. Got that after dinner sweet tooth? Don’t worry, just around the corner you can step into Doc Bernstein’s Ice Cream Lab where they are always mixing up tasty treats. Their original “Merlot Raspberry Truffle” ice cream is scrumptious! With Arroyo Grande being right in the middle of San Luis Obispo County wine country, you have your choice of elegant tasting rooms and wineries featuring award winning Central Coast wines. A newer edition to the village, Gather Wine Bar is quickly becoming a hot spot to sip a glass of wine while listening to live music.

Have you heard about the weather? The wonderfully mild Mediterranean-like climate of Arroyo Grande makes for an immensely active community where it’s not hard to find year round outdoor activities. The hard part is deciding which one to do! Golfing, hiking, biking, and boating are just a few things to add to your fun list to keep you busy. Arroyo Grande is one of the “Five Cities” which includes Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, Oceano, and Grover Beach. So, with beach being right in your own backyard, it’s not surprising that surfing is not only a past time, but a way of life for many Five Cities residents.

If hanging out lakeside is more to your liking, just a few minutes northeast of Arroyo Grande is Lopez Lake Recreational Area home to the Mustang Water Park.  One of the largest strawberry festivals in California happens right here in Arroyo Grande! The Strawberry Festival, held in May, kicks off the beginning of summer with art, crafts and of course, everything strawberry. The festival is followed up with the free Summer Concert Series at the Rotary Bandstand in Heritage Park, the perfect way to spend a swinging evening to the sounds of blues and jazz bands.
